Tile Materials Compared

The honest differences between the materials you'll be shown in a showroom, and what each one actually costs to install in a GTA home.

Comparison of tile materials by water absorption, durability, best use and installed cost
Material Water absorption Best for Sealing Installed, per sq ft
Porcelain 0.5% or less Floors, showers, entryways, heavy traffic, outdoors Not required $12–$22
Ceramic Above 0.5%, often 3%+ Walls, backsplashes, light-traffic floors Not required $10–$18
Natural stone marble, travertine, slate Porous, varies by stone Feature floors, bathrooms, fireplace surrounds Yes — on install and every 1–3 years $18–$35
Glass & mosaic Non-porous Backsplashes, shower niches, accent bands Not required $20–$40
Large format 24″×48″ and up Porcelain, 0.5% or less Open floors, feature walls, fewer grout lines Not required $18–$30
DCOF 0.42

The minimum slip rating under ANSI A137.1 for interior floors that get walked on wet. We check this before quoting any bathroom or entry floor.

PEI III+

The wear rating a floor tile needs for normal residential traffic. PEI IV and V handle entryways, kitchens and homes with dogs.

1/8″ grout

Standard joint for rectified porcelain. Wider joints on natural stone and handmade tile, because the pieces vary in size.

10–15%

Overage to buy on top of your square footage — more for diagonal or herringbone layouts, which generate more offcuts.

Typical Costs

What Renovations Cost in the GTA

Most contractors won't publish numbers. These are the ranges we actually quote, so you can budget before you call anyone.

Kitchen backsplash $900–$2,400 30–50 sq ft typical. Includes demolition, prep, tile setting, grout and silicone. 1–2 days.
Bathroom floor $1,200–$3,000 40–70 sq ft. Includes removal of old flooring, levelling, and new tile. 2–3 days.
Tiled shower, full $4,500–$9,500 Waterproofing membrane, sloped base, niche, full-height walls and glass prep. 4–7 days.
Full bathroom renovation $12,000–$28,000 Complete gut, tile throughout, vanity, toilet and fixture installation. 2–3 weeks.
Main floor tile $14–$24 / sq ft Entry, hallway and open living areas. Includes levelling, uncoupling membrane where needed.
Heated floor system +$14–$22 / sq ft Added on top of tile cost. Electric mat, uncoupling membrane and thermostat. Worth it in Ontario.

These are labour and materials ranges for planning. Final pricing depends on subfloor condition, tile format, layout pattern and access. We confirm everything with a free on-site visit before you commit to anything — and the written quote is what you pay.

Plain English

Tile Terms, Decoded

The words that come up in quotes and showrooms — so you can tell whether a contractor is doing the job properly.

Thinset mortar
The cement-based adhesive that bonds tile to the substrate. Modified thinset contains polymers for extra grip and flexibility; large-format tile needs a medium-bed mortar so it doesn't sag.
Uncoupling membrane
A dimpled sheet, such as Schluter DITRA, laid between subfloor and tile. It lets the two move independently so seasonal movement in the house doesn't crack your tile. Essential over plywood.
Waterproofing membrane
A liquid or sheet barrier applied behind shower tile. Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own — without this layer, water reaches the framing. Any shower quoted without it is a shower that will fail.
Back-buttering
Spreading mortar onto the back of each tile as well as the floor, to reach full coverage. Required on large format. It is slower, and it is the difference between tile that lasts and tile that sounds hollow.
Lippage
When one tile edge sits higher than its neighbour. Some is unavoidable on natural stone; on rectified porcelain it means the installer rushed or skipped levelling clips.
Rectified tile
Tile mechanically cut to an exact size after firing, so every piece matches. It allows tight 1/8″ grout lines and a near-seamless look. Costs more, looks considerably better.
Epoxy grout
Stain-resistant and waterproof, unlike standard cementitious grout. Worth the upgrade on kitchen backsplashes and shower floors. Harder to work with, so not every installer offers it.
Deflection
How much a floor flexes underfoot. Tile is rigid and cracks if the floor moves too much, so a bouncy subfloor must be stiffened before any tile goes down.

Yes — completely free, no-obligation estimates for every project. We visit your home, assess the space in person, and provide a detailed written quote at no cost and with no pressure.

We serve the full GTA and Durham Region including Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Toronto, North York, Scarborough, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Brampton, Mississauga, and more. Call us to confirm your location.

A kitchen backsplash takes 1–2 days. A full bathroom renovation takes 3–7 days. Larger multi-room or full home projects take 1–3 weeks. We always provide a clear, realistic timeline before any work begins.

Either approach works. Many clients choose and supply their own tiles, which we install. We can also source and supply tiles on your behalf, providing guidance on selection, quantities, and suppliers to suit your budget and vision.

Yes. Ultra Renovations Inc is a registered corporation in Ontario with full general liability insurance. Your home and your investment are fully protected from the first day of work through to project completion.

Absolutely. We regularly complete projects that other contractors decline as too difficult or too complicated. Our experienced team genuinely enjoys challenging, custom work — the bigger or more complex the project, the better.

A full tiled shower typically runs $4,500 to $9,500 installed. That covers the waterproofing membrane, a sloped base, a niche, full-height wall tile and glass preparation, over 4 to 7 days. A shower quoted without a waterproofing membrane is a shower that will eventually fail, so check that it is on the quote.

Porcelain absorbs 0.5% water or less, so it handles floors, showers and outdoor use. Ceramic absorbs more, often above 3%, which suits walls, backsplashes and light-traffic floors. Porcelain is denser and harder to cut, which is why installed cost sits slightly higher.

Over a plywood subfloor, yes. A membrane such as Schluter DITRA lets the subfloor and the tile move independently, so the seasonal movement every Ontario home goes through does not crack your tile or grout. It adds cost up front and prevents a far more expensive repair later.

Order 10 to 15 percent above your measured square footage. Go to the top of that range for diagonal or herringbone layouts, which produce more offcuts. Keep the leftovers — dye lots change between production runs, so a future repair rarely matches new stock.

In bathrooms and entryways, most of our clients say yes. An electric mat system adds roughly $14 to $22 per square foot on top of the tile, including the uncoupling membrane and thermostat. It has to go in during installation, so decide before the tile is set.

We accept cash, Interac e-Transfer, and cheque. Payment schedules are clearly agreed upon before any work begins. There are no hidden fees and no surprises — full transparency from quote to final invoice.
